March Devotional

No Rest for the Weary

By the Rev. Wyn Bryant, Stated Supply at Spring Place

Eph. 6:12; Gen. 32:24

In both of these passages, the authors, even though separated from each other by over a thousand years, were describing the sense in which the life of faith always seems to include an ongoing element of struggle and conflict. Whether we're describing life in the time of Abraham, or in the time of Jesus, or in the time of Super WalMarts and I-Pods, it appears that there is this sense in which the life of faith is a constant, never-ending battle!

If our Master-if our Savior-is called the Prince of Peace; if he said, "My peace I give unto you, not as the world gives, give I unto you," why does it feel like we are always in a battle? Excuse me Lord, but what peace?!

Connect Through Music
By Alan Payne, Moderator of the Connect Mission Team

By the time you read this we will be a little more than half way through the season of Lent. In many of our churches the choir is working hard on a cantata to fill the sanctuary with special music and bring the joy of Easter to those who worship there. However there are congregations in our presbytery where the choir loft will be empty this year. In these small churches the talented have grown too old or moved away leaving the worship service empty of the sound of a choir praising God with music.

If you have a good music program perhaps you can share with a church that does not. Invite them to your cantata service or take the service to them. Let this be an opportunity for your choir to shine. After all they work very hard on preparing for this special event.

O come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!  Let us cone into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!  (Psalm 95:1-2)

Advent Dinner

Why should you participate in "The Loaves & Fishes Experience 2008" in Chattanooga, April 4-5?  The reasons are more numerous than the morsels left over from Jesus' beach party -- seeing new ways to live out your faith and to worship God, visualizing new opportunities for Christian education, mission, ministry among youth and older adults, conceiving new approaches to outreach, stewardship and leadership development.  In short, shaping "a new vision for a new day."

3319 Hixson Pike, Chattanooga TN 37415.

The cost: $40 ($20 for youth, children free)

for two days of speakers, workshops, interactions

with your family of faith from throughout

the Presbytery of East Tennessee.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance
Presbyteries respond to questions about assistance

From Alan Cutter, General Presbyter, Presbytery of South Louisiana:

The five presbyteries most affected by the storms of 2005 are aware of the discussion that has taken place and is taking place within our denomination over the expenditure of gifts raised and transmitted through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance.  The attached letter expresses the response of those who recently met with representatives of the General Assembly Council and Presbyterian Disaster Assistance.  Please distribute this letter throughout your presbytery so that correct information may be shared and all may note that those working along the Florida coasts and along the Gulf Coast are doing their best to be both good partners and good stewards.
